First off- tits up is a slang term for dead, dying or not working any longer, as if lying face up in a coffin. Not a sexual term at all although the visual image it produces may indicate it as such.

Reading todays Seattle PI, I’m beginning to realize that there’s a lot of talk about what is gender appropriate and gender specific, and some of the talk is disheartening and a lot of it is just plain stupid and outdated.

The day started as it almost always does with the newspaper and a cup of strong coffee. In the local section is an article about a woman who survived breast cancer and a double mastectomy only to fight with the parks commission about swimming in Seattle public pools topless. Kudos to Jodi Jaecks for taking on a stupid bureaucratic policy and winning her fight against breast cancer. I wish more survivors were confident enough to show their scars in public. I think we need to see them; not for the gawking drive by freak show factor, but to normalize the trauma and to illustrate the effects that cancer has on our bodies. No one should be embarrassed or shamed by the results of a surgical procedure that saved their life.

I know we as a Western society have a fascination with breasts; all of them, big, small, round, pushed up or rappelling down toward the floorboards (gravity happens) but haven’t we become a little too obsessed with modesty and conformity to social norms?
